The joy of parenthood should be an experience that all families can attain. Whether you struggle with infertility, are unable to conceive naturally, or need some assistance having a baby, First Fertility centers can help you achieve this dream. Here, you can learn about the differences between IUI vs. IVF and which is right for your growing family.

IUI vs IVF: What’s the Difference?

IUI and IVF are common methods of assisted reproduction that can help you have a baby. Before beginning your fertility journey with us, it’s important to understand the difference between these two forms of treatment:

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination—or artificial insemination—is a process that deposits sperm directly into the uterus to increase the likelihood of fertilization. Before sperm is inserted, it is concentrated to remove any non-motile (non-moving) specimens. If a male partner has a lower sperm count or other unexplained causes of infertility, IUI can help you become pregnant. We can also perform IUI with donor sperm for LGBTQ+ couples, single women, or individuals who want to have a baby, and we can recommend trusted resources for securing a sperm donor.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization involves a series of advanced procedures to fertilize an egg outside of the body. This is done in an IVF lab using a mature egg and a sperm sample. The egg and sperm can come from you and your partner or a donor. Through a step called ovarian stimulation, our specialists can increase egg production using injectable treatments and then collect mature egg follicles through a short, in-office procedure. Once the embryo has developed in our lab for five days, it is transferred to the uterus, with the goal that it will implant into the uterine lining and continue to develop into a pregnancy. LGBTQ+ couples, couples experiencing infertility, or single individuals who wish to become pregnant may have a higher chance of success with IVF.

IUI vs IVF: Determining Your Fertility Plan

Whether you choose IUI or IVF as your fertility treatment, our First Fertility specialists will be here to support you and work toward a successful pregnancy. Both treatments require routine testing, monitoring, and fertility medication, so we can track ovulation and ensure maximum egg production.

Many patients find that IUI is a good starting point for fertility treatment before starting IVF. However, your fertility plan should reflect your personal medical history, any infertility challenges you’ve experienced, and your family-building goals.

Throughout your treatment, our specialists put you first and ensure customized care that meets your needs. We value transparency when it comes to treatment costs and effectiveness, so you can make the best decisions for your family.
