Treatments for Infertility in Women

Infertility can be a frustrating diagnosis for women trying to have a baby. However, infertility does not have to prevent you from growing your family. With the right treatments for infertility in women, the specialists at First Fertility can help you achieve your family-building goals.

When Should I Be Tested for Infertility?

Infertility testing is an important step in your fertility journey. It can help us uncover any potential causes behind your inability to conceive, allowing us to create a personalized treatment plan.

You should consider testing for infertility if you are:

  • Under 35 years old and trying to conceive without success for at least a year.

  • Over 35 years old and trying to conceive without success for six months.

  • Over 40 years old and trying to conceive without success for three months.

By the time she is 30 years old, a woman will have lost 90% of her eggs, and at the age of 40 years, only around 3% of her eggs are left. * Additionally, some conditions, such as endometriosis and PCOS, can contribute to infertility in women. Infertility testing and consultations consider the age, health history, and family goals of each individual.

How Do We Treat Infertility in Women?

Similar to infertility diagnostic testing, infertility treatments will depend on the individual we are treating. There are a few common recommendations we make for women who struggle with infertility:

In Virto Fertilization (IVF)

IVF is a common method of assisted reproduction that helps many women who are experiencing infertility have a baby. Throughout this process, mature eggs are retrieved by stimulating the ovaries through self-administered injections to increase egg production. A mature egg is then fertilized with sperm outside of the body in the IVF lab and then transferred to the uterus for further development. It requires routine testing, monitoring, and bloodwork but can be an effective option for many women struggling with infertility. Along with supporting infertile women, IVF and reciprocal IVF can help LGBTQ+ women and single women conceive using donor sperm.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is another form of assisted reproduction that can increase the chance of pregnancy in infertile women. By inserting concentrated sperm directly into the uterus, IUI can increase the likelihood of a fertilized egg in women with conditions like endometriosis. IUI can also support women with cervical scarring as well as LGBTQ+ individuals and single women who want to use donor sperm to have a baby.

Fertility Preservation

For many women, their “biological clock” does not align with their life plans. Another fertility treatment we provide is fertility preservation through oocyte cryopreservation, or egg freezing. Vitrification is an advanced cryopreservation technique used to freeze eggs for an indefinite period. We vitrify and store your eggs for years at a time, meaning you can start the IVF process to have a biological child when it’s right for you. It can also help women preparing to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment preserve their fertility.
